I am on a tech list serve and today the entire list received a message with just the letter "J" in it. Well, most of them did, anyway.
Do folks who use Outlook (Express) even realize that their smiley icons show up as just the letter "J" if the receiver does not use their brand of e-mail application?
I have received several "J"s in my e-mails.

Ha, ha! I didn't, but I am Express free at the moment.
I did not know that. I used to be aware of html codes of such icons, but since I have retired, I no longer care. I don't use Outlook email as someone told me it was vulnerable, so maybe I have no problems.
So that's why i've occasionally seen that! No, i don't use Outlook.
