Finally...

...I can finally post. Don't know what was wrong, could not enter a new blog. I also finally got rid of the 4 day migraine. I had to call off from work today and sleep most of the afternoon away, but it is gone. Good riddance.

My email is still not working, probably my ISP.

Party is coming up fast. I have all the dry goods bought, paper plates, napkins, cutlery, banners, decorations, canned goods. I also bought all the hotdogs, kielbasa and hamburger today. I cheated and bought the pre-made patties. And, I bought all the pop. Well, that is what we call soda here in the mid-west. I didn't realize it was called other things until I moved to Virginia. There they called it "drink." To me a drink was a rum and coke. In Virginia, a lot of the women I worked with did not wear pants. They only wore dresses and skirts. (After I re-read that pants part, I thought I better clarify).

When I lived in Texas I discovered the "Blue Laws" and how you could not buy certain things on Sundays. I never heard of that living in the wicked, wicked state of Ohio.

Now, I just need to get the fresh vegetables, ice and BEER! Can't have a party without beer. I will wait until Saturday morning to purchase that. I will buy it cold and keep it cold. Don't want it to get skunked.

Probably won't be able to sleep tonight, since I slept the afternoon away. And what a beautiful afternoon it was. I am hoping for nice weather for the party, but I have my patio and my basement. Although, with all the flooding in town, I am not sure I want to be in anyone's basement when it rains this summer. I read in the paper where the counties have been awarded some monies to help the victims of the flood. I looked at some houses in the area that was flooded, I am so glad I did not buy there. They call it the "hundred year flood area."

Well, the a.m. comes all too soon.

If this blasted headache doesn't stop...

...well, I can't scream because it will hurt too bad. I just get to a point where I am feeling okay, and then I go and do something, like fix dinner. Then I spend the next hour trying to relax and get the pain to stop. The last med I took was at 3:00 (an ibuprofin). I just took another one. I am sitting in cool air conditioning, trying to straighten up my bedroom closet. In the meantime I am trying to run all the updates on two computers to keep them spyware and
virus free.

Never ending. My co-worker said that I should take more than just one ibuprofin. But, I don't. My stomach is queasy, so one will have to do. I forgot about alka-seltzer, and of course I won't take it with the other med, until at least a couple of hours have passed. The alka-seltzer always seems to ease the pain along with my queasy stomach.

Gearing up for the 4th of July week-end. I am having a family/friend get-together on Saturday. That is when my town's park sets off fireworks. I love to have parties and have people over. Plenty of food, drinks, music and games and we are set to go.

I love to tell jokes, but I find that the older I get, I screw them up, or forget the punch line. I heard of someone who had their jokes on a Rolodex. I thought, hmmm - there's an idea. But I am never organized enough to write them down. I love a good joke. I try to be politically correct. It isn't like the years when I was growing up and you could tell an off-color joke. Today you must be careful not to offend anyone. I do the "dumb blonde" jokes and so far, people have been pretty good about it.

Trying to get ready for the party is a lot of work, and these stupid headaches are not helping one bit. Some would say that is why I am having them (the stress of the upcoming party). If they stop tonight, then I will be able to do all that I need to before Saturday. Just let them stop! I noticed that I had three of the triggers this morning. Lack of sleep during the night (my daughter was upset and we were talking in the wee hours of the morning); extra caffeine in the coffee in an attempt to wake up this morning and an over-ripe banana. All migraine triggers. So, there you go.

Rainy Days and Mondays....

...always give me a headache. Maybe that is why so many people like to sleep on rainy days - because they have a stinkin' headache. Is it sinus, is it barometric pressure? I don't know but a lot of people are complaining. Not just joints and bones, but plain ole headaches.

I read the phrase "drive-by download" for the first time today. According to my
gospel, the phrase has been around for more than a year.

I also downloaded Mozilla as my 3rd browser program. Am using it now, in fact. You can find it
here. I have to get out there and try and use new stuff.

I Hate Headaches!

I spent one beautiful, gorgeous day with a confounded headache. I awoke with it at 4:00 a.m. and still had it at 7:00 a.m. I took a migraine pill (Relpax), took an Advil at 10:00 a.m., drank alka seltzer at noon and finally gave in at 1:00 p.m. and took another migraine pill. By 2:00 p.m. it was gone. Just the usual "migraine hangover" as I call it. The main pain is gone, but you can't jump up and down or dance or run or anything, or it will come screaming back. You just relax and move slowly.

All day long, I tried to get housework done (forget yardwork today) and then rest and relax a little bit so the head doesn't pound too much. My normal sleep pattern was upset this week-end. I stayed up later than normal and slept in. Not good practice for a migraine sufferer.

I was able to finally fix my daughter's computer. IE would go no where. I re-installed it and it works beautifully, now. That is, I re-installed IE, not Windows. I would like to spend more time and create my own web page. A personal one. I have a work one that I created on a Linux box, just for the experience. It works fine, but I am bored with it. I need to move on to my own, where I can add stuff that interests me, not work.

My Poor Peru

So my daughter had a friend over last night and neglected to feed the bird. I came home from work today - my daughter went to stay with her friend for the night. Thought I would give Peru some attention and discovered her food tray empty. A bird eats little amounts all day long. I filled up her food tray and held her on my lap as she pecked away. I gave her a treat too, her favorite cereal, Rice chex. And all the newspaper she wanted to eat.

She is such a sweet bird. She gives about 4 different versions of the wolf whistle and a half-hearted rendition of Jingle Bells. Hey, she only mimics what she hears, y'know?

When we first got her we taught her some phrases. One phrase she repeats sometimes is
"Where's (daughter's name)?" Over and over. Then I would say "Is she at school?" If you have ever taught a bird to talk, then you know that you just repeat over and over and over and over again the phrase. Well, much to my chagrin I discovered that I was running the words together for "Is she at school" to "Sheet school?" Didn't sound good. Lucky for me the bird has trouble with the "sh" sound.

But, the absolute funniest thing the bird does is mimic when we laugh. It just makes us laugh harder, and the bird laughs again, and we laugh until we can't breathe.

Trace of a headache today. I am a major headache sufferer. I take Relpax for migraines, when I feel one coming on. I also take a beta-blocker in an effort to thwart them. I began to have sinus trouble after turning 30.

Migraines run in the family. My Mom said her grandmother used to tie a bandana around her head real tight. Imagine yourself back in the 20's and 30's without the medication. Well, I have had migraines for 30 years, and have only had access to the medicine for the past 5 years.

What cracked me up was when Excedrin came out with a migraine version. I literally ran to the store to see what they were putting in the pill to help with migraine. Imagine how surprised I was when the ingredients were the exact same as Extra-strength excedrin. Who are they kidding? I chuckle every time I see someone purchasing a bottle. Look for yourself at the ingredients. Caffeine has been used in excedrin for years. I have used excedrin for years. For a lot of my headaches it was the only thing that worked. As for Tylenol, I may as well take a pez candy.

Smells are the worst when I am getting a migraine. Why do people wear so much perfume or cologne? They are clueless. Take a hint people: dab it on, don't bathe in it! Lights and sounds hurt, too. I had some minor surgery done a couple of weeks ago and the nurses were constantly banging doors, and metal containers together. You know how everything in a hospital is surgical metal? I swear one of them dropped a metal pan on the floor every 15 minutes.

I am getting off track here. Have you ever bathed a cockatiel? I have tried giving the bird a bath in her cage and she will have nothing to do with it. When I first got her I spent a small fortune in toys and play things - she could have cared less. Along with any new foods. Just bird seed and some cereals. Forget the tasty treats. They can sit and grow stale. The bird just gets her bath now and again in the bathtub. I take her to the pet store to get her toenails clipped. I tried it once. I stress the word "once". I am able to clip her wings, though. But the first few times, I had the pet store owner do it. Until I became comfortable with it. But the toenails, I don't think I will ever be able to do. Once I saw blood, that did it for me. I couldn't bear to hurt the poor little thing.

She is probably the most spoiled of all my pets. Think about it. The cats and dog have to wait until I feed them in their dishes. The bird almost always has her dish full and right within her reach. The dog has to wait and go to the bathroom outside. The cats have to go downstairs to the basement laundry room to do their business. The bird just lets if fly wherever she is at. No worries there. Literally going in one end and coming out the other. Bird paradise.

Well, her little tummy is full now. She has had free roam of my computer desk since I began typing. She used to walk across my keyboard. She is so light, she didn't even press the keys down. But, I had to stop it. Dander isn't the best thing for a keyboard. Let alone anything else she may deposit.

Better weather this week than last week.

Well, no wonder yesterday took so long. It "was" the longest day of the year.

Right?

So, today is going so much better. No mess from Sable, now that she is back on her anti-anxiety medication and I tied her to the basement support post. I made the mistake of tying her to my back porch post a month or so ago and she almost pulled it out from under the porch roof. Now, I have to get that fixed. This is one expensive dog.

Work was slow. Most of the schools I work for do not have any extra money to spend this summer for technology so it should remain quiet all summer. I need the break.

This week in my Ohio town, we are welcoming GOBA (Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure). There are cyclists everywhere. Riding, walking, camping. At least they have nice weather for their visit here and not that record rainfall/flooding we had last week. I notice that almost all of them wear helmets.

wow

So ends another dull day. I caught a little bit of "Mississippi Burning" on the TV
while folding laundry. I have not seen the entire movie and tonight was no exception. I had to run before it was over, but it caught my interest enough to try to watch it again someday. I like Gene Hackman's work.

Monday June 21, 2004

Ever have one of those days that you wish would just end? Why do we have Mondays anyway? Couldn't we just tack Mondays onto the week-end? A recovery day. Not that I need to recover. No, not anymore. Not like the wild days of my youth when I didn't care a lick about hang-overs and lack of sleep. I still have the lack of sleep and I still have the headaches, but it isn't from drinking. Mostly from smelling bleach and pet urine.
Yes, I have pets. Three cats, one dog and one bird. I would only have two of the cats if it were up to me, but I am not the only one living in this house, you know? I might keep the bird. I never was a bird person, but the thing kind of grows on you. Oh, and I guess I would keep my daughter. She comes in handy once in a while. She is a hair (and I mean just a hair) taller than me, so she can reach those things high up in the kitchen cabinets. Not like she is ever in the kitchen. The punk never eats, and certainly never cleans the kitchen. If she can't reach it by stretching, she climbs on top of the appliances, much to my dismay. (Am I worried about her or the denting of the stovetop?)
Anyway, back to my pets. My bird is a grey and white cockatiel. Not piebald, just the very common grey and white. It likes to check every visitor over. It gets to be so that when they go to leave, I have to say "Pardon me. Do you have any grey POOP-ON you?" Now, remember back to the commercials with the rich man in the limosine, stopping and asking the passenger in the next limo, "Pardon me. Do you have any grey Poupon?" Har, har, I crack myself up.
The dog is on thin ice. I ran out of the herbal anti-anxiety medicine yesterday and when I came home from work on my lunch break, there was a mess. Six rolls of paper towels I had just bought strung out over the living room floor. My new toilet seat (it wasn't the right color anyway - glad I bought it on sale!), two of my daughter's new bras, my new Rubbermaid containers and a 5# sack of white potatoes. So we made a quick trip to the vet's office this afternoon. For her allergy shot, toenails clipped and the anti-anxiety medicine. She has been on the medicine for about 3 weeks, and I have to admit - it does seem to be helping. She is a pound rescue and the Vet guessed her age at 7 months when we got her and that was 14 months ago - so that would make her, what, 21 months old? Give or take. She suffers from separation anxiety. My daughter goes to summer camp all day long and I work. I do try to get home every day for lunch to let her outside for about 40 minutes. If it isn't raining. She hates water. To her water is only for drinking.
Alas, that brings me to my 3 cats. Two of them found me the third was a "gift" from my sister. She moved and was not allowed pets. Their names are Casper, Jasper and Precious. My dog's name is Sable and my bird is called Peru. (Maybe I should blog with my bird as the narrator. That would be interesting). But, her life is rather dull - stuck in the cage and all. Not saying that my life isn't dull. I'll take dull, thank-you very much.
