....and I can cry if I want to! Why did they have to cut both of my trees down? Why?! It is too late to say anything, now. What is done is done. My neighbor said if he had not been home he thinks they would have taken his huge oak tree, too. He confronted them and they only trimmed a few branches.

Government workers or contractors. They don't care; you're lucky they didn't demolish the house while they were at it.
Give that boy a passifier to chew on and carry around in his back pocket. Tell him how big trees grow from little samplings. Then go buy a two or three foot Japanese Black Pine or some other fast growing tree and take him out with you to plant it. Tell him it's his tree.
The same can apply to your own self. Only you have an ice cream when it's over.
